Week 2A: Intro to Social Media

The majority of social media platforms are geared towards personal use; they have to be in order to attract an active and engaged user base. Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat, and even Youtube need an active user base to bring in profit. Brands will, in turn, pay the platform to advertise to those users and utilize the social media platform to engage with their customers and followers, but they have to first have an active base of users on the platform who are there for personal use. A great example of this is Instagram; Instagram is viewed by the public as a social media platform to share personal photos and experiences with their friends and family. That is the primary appeal for many people joining Instagram. However, it is also a key tool for brands to reach a millennial audience and speak their language, since that demographic is highly engaged on Instagram. Week 3A: Business/Consumer Communication

Social media has heightened the importance of business and consumer communication. With the consumers new found ability to publicly share their experiences (both positive and negative) online, it can make or break a business' reputation. Personally, one experience of difficult communication with a business comes to mind: United. I had a flight with United Airlines in which I purchased wifi, but then the wifi didn't work properly for the entirety of the flight. I sent an email to United customer service and refunds, and waited a week without hearing back. I called the customer service number, where they directed me to just send an email to the refunds email address... so I was stuck in something of a loop and out my $25. Then, I tweeted about the experience, tagging United. Since I have a larger following (20,000 on twitter), my tweet got noticed by the United social media team rather quickly and they sent me a direct message within an hour. Week1A: My Template

When selecting the template and theme for my blog, I wanted to keep in mind my overall branding and the messaging my visuals should send. I decided on the white, Emporio theme for a sleek and clean layout. While I like a clean aesthetic that isn't too busy, I still wanted my blog to be unique and not top basic, so I customized the fonts and colors in the "advanced" tab. I used the Oswald font for my titles and headers which is bold and modern, and the Georgia font for the content and posts which is a very easy to read font that still sticks with my modern and clean branding. I used two pops of color in various locations on the vlog- a pale pink for titles, and a deep teal blue for links and bar icons.
